Jeanne Lowry
Jeanne Lowry was a psychiatric nurse who founded the Homeless Outreach Nursing Center at the American Red Cross in the 1980s. She also co-founded the Salvation Army’s Respite Care Program to provide shelter to people recovering from surgery or illness. A mentor to many young outreach workers, social workers, and nurses, Jeanne was a beloved member of the Street Angels Board until her passing in May 2020. The Street Angels Jeanne Lowry Service Award has been established in her honor.
The Annual Jeanne Lowry Award was established by Street Angels to recognize the unique and enduring example of Jeanne Lowry’s extraordinary life of service to people experiencing mental illness and homelessness in the Milwaukee community. Each year Street Angels leadership team identifies an individual working in the field of homeless services, as an employee or volunteer, who exemplifies the characteristics exhibited by Jeanne Lowry in her long service to our community; namely, compassion, persistence, optimism, and resourcefulness.
